International Week: Social Conflicts, Discrimination and Inequality

The political situation in Europe and other parts of the world has changed in recent years. In different countries right-wing populists and right-wing extremists parties and movements have gain attraction. These movements challenge democratic and open societies. This means a lot of challenges for Social Work and Early Childhood Pedagogy.

CHALLENGES FOR SOCIAL WORK AND EARLY CHILDHOOD PEDAGOGY

One of the most discussed topics in this context is migration and dealing with it. Wars, conflicts and social inequality have led to migration and refugee movements. Developments like these fuel the radicalisation of discussions and intensify the pressure on policy in many countries. Right-wing parties like the AFD in Germany or FPÖ in Austria increase attraction. New boarders are created between the „ingroups“ and the (new?) „outgroups“ or the „established“ and the „outsiders“. A debate has started who does belong to the society and who does not. Research about the so-called group-focused emnity in Germany shows that this often has to do with the question of inequality: Who is valuable for a society and who is not? In this perspective different minority groups (like refugees, homeless people, LGBT) might be addressed by discrimination and prejudice in parts of Europe and the world. It seems that completely different ideas of society clash; disintegration processes can be observed.

This means a lot of challenges for Social Work and Early Childhood Pedagogy which might vary between countries and cultures. Social Work and Early Childhood Pedagogy have not only to support minorities or to deal with such conflicts in everyday life. Moreover the self-understanding of Social Work and Early Childhood Pedagogy is a political one. Social Work for example as a discipline and scientifically based profession has a socio-political claim as well. This means e. g. to take part in political as well as social discussions and to bring in the positions of social work. Social justice or human rights are – for example – discussed as important reference points.
